What is BYOD?
In a perpetually changing technological landscape, the centrally driven and supported model for the supply of technology resources in education is no longer a model which can meet the demands of teachers and students. With the demise of funding of the DER program by the Australian Government, schools and systems are examining ways of delivering a 1:1 computer ratio per student.
Global trends both in business and education, have pointed the way to a BYOD model for 1:1 computing. BYOD (or Bring Your Own Device) refers to technology models where students bring a personally owned device to school for the purpose of learning.
BYOD has become a popular choice amongst schools around the country. A BYOD approach recognises that technology plays an important role in the lives of our students and that choices about technology are very much personal.
BYOD is designed to give students and families, freedom to make technology choices that suit them and their circumstances.
The BYOD initiative here at Lewisham is intended to allow teachers and students to make use of the learning opportunities that are made possible by the use of wireless devices that can connect to the internet and cloud based storage through the school’s wifi network. Devices will be used for the purpose of research and access to information; collaborating and communicating with others; and as a means through which students can demonstrate their learning in ways previously unimaginable.
All students in Years 7-12 will be required to bring their own personal learning device to school each and everyday. Recommended devices for students in Years 5 and 6 are iPads, (version 2 or later). Students in years 7-12 are encouraged to use either Apple or Windows based Laptops.
