Device GuidelinesOne of the most common questions that we have been asked is “What device should I buy for my son?”. We have deliberately avoided mandating any one device or platform. We do not believe in a “one size fits all” approach and that a truly personalised learning experience must involve choice and preference. We believe that a device 'agnostic' approach is the most helpful way forward.
Having said that we do not mandate or require a particular device, our experiences thus far have allowed us to refined our thinking about the sorts of technology that are most likely to be helpful for our boys and the factors that should contribute to the decisions surrounding choosing a personal learning device for your son. Advice for 2017 1. iPads have been incredibly successful in the Primary years, while laptops seem to not only be more popular choice for in secondary students, but allow more flexibility for the tasks our boys are engaged with in the senior years. It will be mandatory therefor, that boys in years 5 and 6 purchase / bring an iPad to school from 2016 onwards. 2. We recommend either a Apple or Windows based laptops or Ultrabooks for boys in Years 7-12. In recommending this type of device however, we realise it is not the cheapest option and we recognise that the financial circumstances of each and every family in our school community may vary. We have therefor prepared a list of acceptable devices. which includes Apple iPads. Acceptable devices may include those already owned by families. These devices will adequately; connect to the school’s WiFi network, allow for access to the internet and cloud based storage and meet most requirements for each of the Key Learning Areas of the Senior school (albeit with some limitations). 3. The size and battery life of the device are crucial. Devices larger than 14 inches in size become heavy, cumbersome and awkward to carry around, while devices smaller than 10 inches (including iPad mini's) become impractical. Devices between 11 and 13 inches seem to have the right balance. The battery must retain charge for a minimum of 6-8 hours - the longer the better. 4. Protect your investment with a cover or sleeve. Ensure you purchase this prior to the commencement of school in 2016. You may also consider insurance. 5. Take some time to read the Frequently Asked Questions section of this website. Most of your questions should be answered there. DOWNLOAD THE 2017 BYOD TECHNOLOGY INFORMATION SHEET HERE |
